Global Youth Justice Movement

Record 1,600+ Diversion Programs

Logo1

GobalYouthJustice.org

Global Youth Justice, Inc. was Incorporated as an International Nonprofit Corporation in 2015, with 501c3 International Charity Status scheduled for approval in 2016.  From 2009 to 2015, Global Youth Justice successfully existed as a Limited Liability Corporation, and is now in the transition process to an International Nonprofit Corporation with 501c3 Charitable Status and a Board of Directors in 2016.  Global Youth Justice champions volunteer-driven strategies and low-cost innovations which alleviate some of the world’s more pressing and costly societal problems.  Global Youth Justice strives to improve the quality of life for humans through reducing high juvenile crime rates and historic-high incarceration rates of adults locally and globally.

Global Youth Justice achieves this through favorable outcomes that result from advancing the global expansion of quality volunteer-driven youth justice and juvenile justice voluntary diversion programs often called youth court, teen court, peer court, student court, peer jury and youth peer panel.  Record numbers of volunteer youth (including former juvenile offenders) now serve as jurors, defenders, prosecutors, judges and clerk/bailiffs in local juvenile justice systems on real juvenile crimes, offenses and violations involving their peers.  A record 1,600+ plus communities around the Globe on 4 Continents now operate one of these cost-effective programs to reduce the incidence and prevent the escalation of juvenile crime and incarceration rates, which thereby reduces adult crime and incarceration rates.

While there exist greater linkages today between nations and peoples than our planet has likely ever known, we still see all around us an ever-increasing divide between the rich and poor.  This is especially transparent in the disproportionate representation of the poor and those with a disease in the juvenile justice system and criminal justice system.  These youth justice diversion programs around the globe are engaging youth in record numbers to volunteer and work side-by-side with adults who have empowered them to bridge this divide and work toward a shared vision of human dignity, greater equity, freedom, basic security and justice.  Youth must be at the forefront in the local to global struggle to overcome some of our most pressing and complex social and economic global challenges.

If negative peer pressure is a primary factor in leading some youth to commit a crime, offense and/or violation, then positive peer pressure can be harnessed and redirected to become a positive force and lead other youth to adhere to the rule of law and become more productive citizens.   These youth justice and juvenile justice voluntary diversion programs harness positive peer pressure and utilize it in a peer judgment setting to help address the anti-social, delinquent, and/or criminal behavior of youth.  The ‘peer judgment’ and ‘positive peer pressure’ aspects of these programs are the two (2) primary programmatic elements which separate these youth justice and juvenile justice voluntary diversion programs from all of the others.

Learn about The CORe Project and How Teen Courts can Partner for Positive Youth Outcomes.

The CORe Project

Picture

The CORe Project is a 7-16-week self-esteem program for teenagers that was first integrated into the Robeson County, North Carolina Teen Court program as part of the NC Academic Center for Excellence in Youth Violence Prevention (NC-ACE). NC-ACE, now the NC Youth Violence Prevention Center, is run through a grant given to the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

CORe is an acronym for Creating Our Reality and was co-developed by motivational speaker, author and consultant Anthony DeNino, along with, Jim Barbee of UNC – Chapel Hill and the Center Coordinator of the NC Youth Violence Prevention Center. The objective of The CORe Project is multi-faceted and ranges in topics including Emotional Development, Empathy, Vulnerability, Overcoming Fear, Self-Esteem and Empowerment.

By the end of 2016, The CORe Project will be a mainstay sanction in a minimum of 11 Teen Courts throughout North Carolina thanks in part to a grant awarded by the NC Governor’s Crime Commission. However, The CORe Project is also being considered in a number of other states including Maryland, Virginia and Louisiana for implementation. With regard to why it is spreading so rapidly, Cynthia Seaforth, Teen Court Coordinator for the Conflict Resolution Center in Concord, NC says, “The CORe program is beneficial, useful, and easy to administer. The lessons are designed to capture the attention of the youth and assist them as they explore and express thoughts and feelings about the subject matter.”

As the success of The CORe Project began to take effect, two very exciting things happened.

Upon learning of the accomplishments of The CORe Project’s seven-week program in Teen Courts, The North Carolina Department of Public Safety approached Anthony and Jim about expanding the program from its initial design to 16-weeks, in order to assist more Teen Courts in reaching their goals for higher rankings. The second exciting event developed during a chance meeting.

While at a conference, Anthony struck up a conversation with a woman at the table they were sitting at. Having never met before, it wound up that she was on the Board of Education for Alamance-Burlington School System in North Carolina.   When he told her about The CORe Project, she had to learn more and ultimately, following meetings with the Superintendent’s office, the program was implemented in its first school – Ray Street Academy – an alternative school in Graham, NC servicing middle and high school students.

Since that time, it was discovered that The CORe Project met many of the Common Core standards for health class. As such, it was implemented in its first Charter School, Clover Garden School, both as part of their health class curriculum for 7th and 8th graders and as an after-school disciplinary tool for middle and high school students. In fact, Walter Finnigan, the Director of this Burlington, NC school has this to say: “The utilization of The CORe Project within the school climate is beneficial to maximum student growth. The CORe program takes the time to teach students about healthy ways in which to handle different situations that they may be faced with as an adolescent. The CORe program allows for the instructor and student to build a relationship with each other built on trust and respect. Students are taught how to ‘get to know’ themselves and are able to handle situations more effectively upon completion of the program.” In discussing the daily quote and ice-breakers – elements of The CORe Project – Mr. Finnigan states the following: “This allows students the opportunity to think critically about the questions begin asked. This improves students’ critical thinking and writing skills.”

Overall, The CORe Project is currently in four North Carolina schools with ongoing discussions for implementation into another 12 schools before the end of 2016.

To learn how your Teen Court, school, community-based or prison-based program (The CORe Project’s latest area of expansion being discussed), please visit www.CreatingOurReality.com/the-core-project.html or contact Anthony or Jim directly. You can contact Anthony at CreatingOurReality@gmail.com and Jim at JBarbee1967@gmail.com.

Research, Evaluation and Data Collection

Record 1,700+ Volunteer-Driven

Youth/Teen/Student/Peer Court and Peer Jury Diversion Programs

The Impact of Teen Court on Youth Offenders This forty-eight (48) page publication is the final report on the federally funded evaluation of Teen Courts and it was conducted by the Urban Institute.  It is the most current and most thorough research available on teen courts and youth courts available.  Rare recidivism rates are reported.  More than 500 cases from (3) sites in (3) states were compared with similar cases handled by the traditional juvenile justice system.  Reductions in recidivism took place in all (3) Youth Justice programs to include the Anchorage Youth Court Alaska, Independence Peer Court in Missouri, and the Tempe Teen Court in Arizona.  This report was funded by OJJDP and conducted by the Urban Institute.  This is a must read for anyone interested in teen courts, youth court, peer court, student court, and youth peer panels.  (Click here) Research and Data Collection
Making Youth Court as Effective as Possible This eight (8) page technical assistance bulletin examines program in the state of Kentucky over a twelve year period.  It provides some solid ideas for what to do and what not to do.  It is important to note Kentucky is one of the few states where the programs are operated more similar than other states where local programs within a state can operate them very different, albeit with similar outcomes anticipated.  This bulletin was funded and published by the ABA and OJJDP.   Deborah Williamson, James Wells, Mabel McKinney-Browning, and Scott B. Peterson are responsible for this technical assistance bulletin enhancing the Global Youth Justice Movement. (Click here) Research and Data Collection

Youth Courts: An Empirical Analysis of Future Research Needs

This 48 page report includes the most recent national data available on local youth courts, teen courts, peer courts, student courts and youth peer panels in America. This report was officially released in early 2008, and is the most current data available as of 2010. More than 1,000 of these local youth justice programs in America were sent surveys and more than 350 of the staff from these programs collected and reported the data used in this report. This report was completed by George Washington University and it was funded by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. Dr. Jeffrey Schneider was the author and distinguished researcher who undertook this national data collection analysis. Dr. Beverly Glenn and Ruth Marshall from George Washington University and Scott Bernard Peterson from Global Youth Justice we the lead administrators for this project. This report is a excellent. It will be helpful with writing reports and grants and sharing with your colleagues.  (Click Here) Research and Data Collection
