Massachusetts YOUTH COURT Leader

Lisa Birkness-Tavares

Age 48

Obituary

Longtime Excellent Youth Court Director Lisa Birkness-Tavares has sadly passed away at age 48. For more than a decade, Lisa was the lead champion for volunteer-driven Youth Court diversion programs in Massachusetts. Like many adult staff who work in these Youth/Teen Court programs, it was both a professional and personal mission for Lisa. Lisa was also instrumental in helping Global Youth Justice organize and convene it’s 1st Annual Peer to Peer Summer Training in Provincetown, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, back in 2010. Lisa wisely trained an excellent staff member Nina Sousa to run the South Coast Youth Court in her absence. Thank You Lisa for ALL the children, youth and families you impacted positively with your life.

GLOBAL YOUTH JUSTICE, INC.

“Making the Time for Juvenile Crime”

If negative peer pressure is a primary factor in leading some youth to commit a crime, offense and/or violation, then positive peer pressure can be harnessed and redirected to become a positive force and lead other youth to adhere to the rule of law and become more productive citizens. These youth justice and juvenile justice voluntary diversion programs harness positive peer pressure and utilize it in a peer judgment setting to help address the anti-social, delinquent, and/or criminal behavior of youth. The ‘peer judgment’ and ‘positive peer pressure’ aspects of these programs are the two (2) primary programmatic elements which separate these youth justice and juvenile justice voluntary diversion programs from all of the others. As of 2017, there are a Record 1,700+ Active Youth Court, Teen Court, Student Court, Peer Court and Peer Jury Diversion Programs — with Hundreds More in Various Stages of Development.
